New breeds of sheep are created

Creation of new breeds of sheep has started in our republic. Research staff of the Animal Husbandry Scientific Research Institute crossbred 2 local sheep breeds with 2 sheep breeds imported from France and Tajikistan and carry out the work of purchasing new lines and breeds. The goal is to create a more productive, disease-resistant breed of sheep. Scientific staff of the Animal Husbandry Scientific Research Institute have started work on the improvement of existing breeds and types of sheep, restoration and protection of breeds created on the basis of public selection, as well as breeds that are in danger of extinction. Currently, research is being done here to crossbreed 4 breeds and obtain a new breed for dairy and meat production.

Mahir Hajiyev, director of SRİAH: The homeland of Hisar sheep is Tajikistan. Their 2-year-old rams were more likely to reach 190 kg live weight. Twins were also more likely to be born. These mainly belong to the type of fat tail sheep. This Lakun sheep you see was also brought to Azerbaijan. The main direction of Lakun sheep is meat and dairy direction. We bought the lamb from the Bozach sheep and Lakun sheep. We have crossbreeds of the local black Dolak breed and the Bozakh breed of the Gala sheep, as well as the Avasia and the Bozak sheep, and we are conducting research on them.
7 million 821 thousand sheep and 633 thousand goats of 13 breeds are kept in our republic. These newly created breeds will also support the feeding, maintenance and breeding of existing animals in farms.
Yasin Aslanov, senior researcher of SRIAH: We mainly use regionalized animals to create new breeds. The goal is that they are adapted to local conditions. Our scientific research work started in 2020 will continue. Adapting to these conditions, we will offer highly productive sheep breeds to farmers in the future.
The main goal of the scientists of the institute is to create new breeds in sheep farming and turn it around in this field. One of the main goals of the Animal Husbandry Scientific Research Institute is to ensure development by achieving the creation of 2 new breeds and 2 hybrids suitable for Azerbaijan conditions in 2025.
